Cost Estimating for Shell & Tube Exchangers

DESCRIPTION
The
BEST program breaks down all major exchanger components based on TEMA type and computes the size, thickness and weight of main parts based on design pressures and exchanger size. Program then performs a thorough cost estimating by generating labor man-hour requirements and a comprehensive bill of material based on actual fabrication methods. Normal run takes about 5 to 10 min.

COVERAGE
TEMA - All standard configurations.
MATERIAL -  Carbon Steel material prices are built into the program. Several other commonly used materials and alloys can also be specified using the Material Cost Factors listed in the manual.
LABOR -  Features a unique method for labor man-hour calculations based on TEMA type, size, shell and channel pressures, mechanical design, manufacturing Codes and Standards as well as client specific requirements. Labor rate ($/hr) and mark-ups (% profit) is built into the program but could also be specified by the user.

INPUT
The on-screen input is user-friendly and can be run by anyone with some knowledge of shell & tube exchangers with little or no cost estimating background. The input routine will address general questions and depending on design and TEMA type will ask specific questions. This assures implementation of all fabrication and optional construction requirements such as tube-to-tubesheet welding or use of expansion joint for fixed tubesheet type, if required. 
The 'Expert System' of the
BEST program checks user's input data for logic and acceptability and if errors are detected, warning or guiding messages shall be displayed.  
A typical run takes about 5 to 10 minutes per item allowing many exchanger units be estimated quickly.

OUTPUT
The printout is extensive and well organized showing the input data as well as size, thickness, weight, price and labor hour breakdowns for each component for easy reference. Also included is the final labor and material cost, and the total unit price and weight. After viewing the results on the monitor, user has the option to send the results to the printer.

DESCRIPTION  
The TDST program is a complete software system for thermal design and rating of shell and tube exchangers covering full range of services and TEMA standards. This program has been developed over many years of extensive practical experience on thousands of various exchanger design configurations. 
The most advanced correlations reflecting the latest developments in heat transfer technology along with feedback from the actual performance data on installed units has been incorporated into
TDST.  Thousands of units designed by this program are presently in operation worldwide.

APPLICATION
Program covers all possible operation modes in horizontal and vertical position including:
Single Phase:    Gas - Gas,  Liq - Liq and  Liq - Gas.
Boiling:            pool, forced circulation, natural circulation (thermosiphon).
Condensation:    isothermal, narrow and large condensing range, steam condensing out of non-condensable, multi-component condensation, partial and total condensers.

PHYSICAL PROPERTY DATA BANK
TDST is integrated with data bank of hundreds of compounds including Steam, Water, Hydrocarbons, gas treating chemicals (Amines & Glycols), heat transfer fluids such as Dowtherms, Therminols, and many others commonly used in the chemical process industry.
If gas mixture physical properties are needed, it can be determined by GMIX program, one of the software provided with 'Support Software Package' (see details few pages down) which calculates the specific heat, thermal conductivity and viscosity of the mixture when gas composition is known.


INPUT DATA
Data is entered on a single page input form and a text file is then created using programs such as EDIT of MS DOS.
The input sheet format is self-explanatory and user-friendly. Program can operate in either English or Metric unit. Fluids on the shell and tube side could be reversed by a single command with option to run both cases simultaneously. A detail input instructions is included in the manual.


OUTPUT
A well organized output includes design summary mini-prints of intermediate size selections by program along with calculated heat transfer parameters and exchanger hydraulics showing why they were not acceptable (e.g. under surface, excessive pressure drops, etc.).
Through this routine,
TDST will search and optimizes the unit size to satisfy the duty, heat flux, pressure drops, tube length and other limitations specified by the user or required by design conditions.
Once the optimum design is selected, a detail computation of critical parameters of the final selection is displayed for engineer's evaluation.
An extensive "error-checking" routine is built into
TDST to check for possible wrong or impractical data entry. The "intelligent-system" provides essential messages, warnings and design analysis to ensure the most economical and the best design configuration. 
If any signs of flow-induced or acoustical vibration is detected, a detail analysis shall be carried out and suggestions and remedies to eliminate or reduce vibration problems will be outlined for designer's review. User has the option of viewing the entire output before sending it to the printer.

Number of stand-alone heat transfer and fluid flow software programs to assist in design and simulation of shell-and-tube exchangers.
